Marijuana
Problem: Marijuana use among high school students in the Twin Cities.
In response to the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) conducted at the three local high schools, a compilation of student responses include the following:
- 40% of Redwood 11th graders have used Marijuana in the past 30 days
- 62% of Redwood 11th graders who have used Marijuana tried it by age 16
The Twin Cities Police Department reported the following in the period from January to September 2011:
- 113 Marijuana-related police contacts with juveniles
- 44 Marijuana-related incidents with juveniles
Risk Factors: Marijuana is easy to get. 89% of Redwood 11th Graders reported that Marijuana is “fairly easy” or “very easy” to get. (CHKS). Sources include using a Medical Marijuana card at dispensaries, growing at home or on public land, and obtaining from friends, dealers, or parents, and at parties.
